@Caryn—I guess it must be your settings. It's there for me (excepting this page, of course). The scrolling dock-menu thingy is a FlashXML object, if that helps. Do you have Flash set to "Allowed" in your browser's site settings?

Just so you know, though, that thing's a bit redundant anyway. Those are the same 25 "Popular Movies and TV Shows" shown on the right side of the page, assuming you can those.

I mean, assuming you can see those.

@AsheDraven—It's unfortunate that you're having trouble playing MKV files. The Matroska container is becoming more and more popular and widely used; in fact, it seems to be the container of choice for most uploaders these days.

It's possible that some video guru around here can help you solve the problem if you can give us some more info. Which player are you using and on which OS? Have you noticed any commonalities among the MKVs that won't play properly? Is it only HEVC encodes, or is it only 1080p or 720p res. videos? Is there anything else that might be relevant?
Probably, the more details you can provide, the more likely you are to get useful answers/suggestions. Many of us are happy to help when we can. :)

@Atoz

Yes, you found it, you're hired!.. Now will you work for free?

Seriously though, I'm looking to carve out a more profitable venture here. I'll keep you in the loop if you're interested.

Do you know of ABC Clio and Lynda? They are both educational publishers. They are/were? big in my area. I know folks who worked with them.

As for the coincidentally of things we share, I find it of little surprise yet nonetheless meaningful.. I find much synchronism in our chaos, beyond that IDK, do you?

Yup, grammar is fun. Of late I'm learning Google and AP scripts.

Yup, USA. Seems to me we are blessed yet cursed. I've traveled through most of the states including Hawaii. I'm a Californian, but I'm looking to move to the upper Midwest next year. I like visiting big cities but I'm a small town dude.

So are you one of our resident trolls? If so, you should be ashamed of yourself! LOL.. But no worries, I think this is somewhat of a "safe space" for the moderate troll who's also there to help folks as need be.

If fact, it looks like some new folks are here with questions.

Hmm..

@AsheDraven

Video/computer subgeek expert here.

I'm going to assume you're on a PC.

Keep in mind that x265/HEVC files don't play proper or at all on some systems. Likewise, large files such as 1080p can be an issue.

But if you can't even play 480p AVC mkv files (as you said), then this could be a number of things. I would start by trying a new player, such as MPC-BE, PotPlayer, or VLC (all free). I use all 3, but PotPlayer is likely the best. This site recommends VLC as it play on all platforms.

If this problem still persists, they you may have extra video codecs on you're system that should be removed. Also, you're video card/component may need a software update.

As always, there's a chance you may have some sort of virus/spyware, or rather some unwanted process that runs when you just play mkv files. Hmm.

If you have more questions, please submit you're PC specs. Also, Speccy is a free tool that can help you get all that info.

Other than that, welcome, and expect to be trolled and insulted. It's the nature of the beast here, as we have a very liberal or lazy moderator here.

CORRECTION

"you're" should be "your" is some places there. I get those mixed up because I'm an idiot, ha.

@meridian

You think that's a troll? Hmm..

Maybe. I think he/she/it is likely more of a wannabe, edgy do-gooder, likely 13 yo or so. IDK.

Perhaps Admin will answer?

Ha..

@dny_

I was wrong about you. I'm actually liking your harsh style in dealing with these clueless folks.

In fact, I feel somewhat bad for taking your name.. somewhat..

Regardless, glad to see your out there do the dirty work this site often needs.

@thedude—I'm pleased to have passed the initial challenge! Yes, please do keep me looped into all the ventures and adventures.
I have heard of Lynda. I actually have some of their programming stuff, although I must admit, I haven't really looked at it yet.

Professionally, I've mostly edited & written English/Grammar texts for students (elementary through high school).

I've spent quite a bit of time roaming these States as well—months and months driving hither and thither. I've made it to all of 'em except Alaska (so far).
I live in the NYC area now, but I did live in L.A. for five years. That's where I got into graphic design.

Am I a troll? Gee whiz, I never knew. [blush] What was it that gave me away? Mayhaps you mean I'm just trolling along in general? Then again, you could mean I have diamonds for teeth and eat rocks. Ha. :)

Gotta get some sleep now (finally!), but, again, please keep me aboob of what you're working on there.
Thanks!

Just wondering if anyone can tell me why it takes so long to get episodes for A Place to Call Home, Is it possible to get S05E09 in 480p mkv? The next epsiode will come out on Sunday and still haven't gotten the last one. Don't seem to have that problem with other series so just wondering.

Thanks,

Let the record show, that in an attempt to help (aka confuse) AsheDraven, y-knot would never recommend Potplayer and just recommends installing K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, which will install a sketchy version of MPC, and you need to look out for adware, likely each time you update it.

LOL

Look, if you don't like Potplayer, then there are other choices, like MPC-BE. But suggesting K-Lite Mega Codec Pack to AsheDraven with your BS vitriol, that's a noob move dude, even if you are a paid troll.

Note: Installing stand-alone codec packs can cause issues with other video software on your computer.

Note: Media Player Classic (by Gabest) is a project that died years ago. Modern players such as MPC-BE and Media Player Classic Home Cinema are based on Media Player Classic.

Beyond that, anyone looking to learn more, I suggest they go to videohelp dot com, as there's less trolls there and trusted help.

I've used PotPlayer for about a year, and have had no problems at all. It uses less memory than VLC, and has played everything I've thrown at it. I'm not sure what you_wot! and y-knot are on about, bug I've found no bugs. All the other complaints seem to be about support, but who needs support when the player simply works. For that matter, when was the last time you went to a company for support on _any_ of your software?

thedude covered codec packs, so yeah, stay away.

As for net neutrality, it has yet to go through Congress. If you live in the states, now is the time to write your House representatives and your senators.

Hello Atoz and meridian..

Yup, sadly Net neutrality is dead.. Regardless, I think our focus now should be more on dealing with the monopolies.

That said, although I know more about this than most folks, I have little advice. It's a complicated web of vying sectors.

So, do you all watch Mr Robot?.. If so, consider this: Truth is stranger than fiction.

As for media player, we know the gig. VLC is a bit clunky, but it's open sourced, which is a plus. PotPlayer is corporate, so who knows how evil they are with our privacy and such. For me, they both run about the same, but I like PP's GUI better than VLC.

On my slower PC, VLC and PP don't run that great, but MPC-BE does the job there with no issues.

Wait, I was wrong.. As meridian pointed out, NN still has through Congress.. My bad.

As for sites like this getting hurt if NN gets killed.. Hmm, maybe. Most of the traffic is with the file hosts. And they in turn can use CDNs (at least for streamed content), but they may get thwarted there, IDK.

But downloads don't demand as much as streams, as that data is distributed through the networks with much less demands than streaming.

As it is, I get 18 mbps down on the cheapest plan my ISP offers. I could still survive at 5 mbps. Also, I get no more than 1.5 mbps for my downloads with the file hosts through here, which is fine.

@Atoz

I'd like to hear more about what Allen Jude has to say about NN. He owns Scale Engine, which is mostly a video server service, and I remember they have their own CDN of some sort. In other words, he is one of the little companies that will likely get hurt if NN gets killed, but IDK.. I'll keep you posted as I learn more.

Yeah, of there's still a chance of it being blocked by Congress, but do we really think the Republican majority there is likely to do that? They love nothing better than undoing Obama-era anything.
