years ago when .mkv became the popular format and not so many files were being encoded as .avi I realized I could convert the .mkv files. however, this became a full time job with as many shows and movies as I was downloading so I bought a new player capable of playing .mkv files.

there are many xbmc type players that cost less than $30.00
you may want to look at getting a new player like I did if you download a lot of shows.
